THE TRIPLE ‘R’ in Swimming
Range, Rhythm and Relaxation
The Key elements to sprinting 💪
®️ Range
We can determine everyone’s optimal stroke range for swimming competitions through assessing the stroke at the trainings. In training, the goal is to effectively reduce the number of strokes done per length.
®️ Rhythm
The basis of maintaining the quality of motion. As soon as the rhythm is lost, distance per stroke and speed is decreased.
®️ Relaxation
The secret of sprinting is in the recovery phase of the stroke.
💙 Let me explain:
The feel of the water is the ability to balance the propulsive forces and counter them through the stroke 🌊
In training, the goal is to minimise the fluctuations (irregular rises and falls) in acceleration and deceleration that occur at different phases of the stroke 🟰
Many swimmers, including myself, were first taught that sprinting was all about how powerful and fast you are, and how you are able to apply force through the water 💪 Only after Guennadi Touretski introduced the concept of the Triple R method, did the true essence of sprinting unveil itself to me ⭐️💥
It’s all about allowing oneself to relax through uninterrupted rhythm, yet maintaining the distance per stroke 🧠
It’s a state of mind I like to call ‘being in the zone’, where you find yourself in complete awareness and absolute focus while capturing the momentum of rhythm, range and relaxation 🧘
💙 How to practice? 👇
®️ Range:
Think of a piece of string, if you pull it too fast and hard, it will break. So apply gentle force to the stroke, allowing yourself to stay long and complete the stroke without unnecessary interruptions.
®️ Rhythm:
Count! Sing! Rap! Rhyme!
Without rhythm, there is no music
®️ Relaxation:
Relax your face!
Ever notice how tense your face is when you’re trying to complete a difficult task, especially when sprinting?
Let go of the tension and feel how your cheeks and mouth move freely through the water.
You will quickly notice that by relaxing that area of your body, the rest will follow.
💙 CONCLUSION
Be clever and train smart, you will find how simple swimming fast actually is 💪
